Burnley Bridge Business Park
Overview
The works included the construction of an 18m high earthworks embankment constructed from site won materials from a cut and fill exercise and a reinforced concrete integral bridge with pre-cast bridge beams spanning over the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and constructed on 12m deep piles.
Works also included the provision of new site access roads including all associated footpaths, drainage, road markings, signage, street lighting and landscaping, mains services connections, provision of substations and security/CCTV.
Prior to the main works starting, mine shaft exploration and remediation works were also completed.
Key Challenges
The 18m high embankment required strict control of the earthworks and cut and fill exercise, which also included remediating parts of the previously industrialised site.
The new bridge was constructed adjacent to and over the Leeds-Liverpool Canal which required careful liaison with the Canals and Rivers Trust, especially installation of the new bridge beams over the live canal.
Added Value
EWCE managed to re-use the vast majority of materials arising from the site, either by directly incorporating them into the new 18m high earthworks embankment, by processing them to re-use as compliant aggregates and by re-using materials in accordance with the CL:AIRE Protocol.
Client Feedback
These are exciting times at Burnley Bridge. As well as the infrastructure going in, a 64,100 sq ft warehouse building is being comprehensively refurbished, providing a superb base for a logistics or industrial occupier, and 29,000 sq ft of speculative new units are being built. These will be ready for occupiers to move into in February.”
