Eric Wright Group Celebrates the Builders of Tomorrow

A group of year 11 learners has been recognised for exceptional work with the Eric Wright Learning Foundation (EWLF).

The EWLF, which aims to provide students with basic construction skills, hosted its ninth annual awards ceremony to celebrate the achievements of its 15 to 16 year old learners.

Almost 70 students attended the ceremony hosted at the Wellington Park Hotel in Leyland where they collected their BTEC certificates including Level 1 Diploma in Construction, Level 1 Certificate in Construction and Level 2 Extended Certificate in Construction.

The final prize of the evening was the Eric Wright Trophy, an award presented to the learner whose skills, attitude and commitment to the EWLF programme have been distinct throughout their time at the centre. This trophy was presented to 16 year-old Shaun Eccleston from Wellfield Business and Enterprise College, along with a cheque for £100, by Eric Wright himself.

Mr Piers Tolson, chair of the Foundation Steering Group, said: “We are very proud of our students and their achievements. They have worked incredibly hard over the past two years and we would like to congratulate all of them on their wonderful success.”

Jack Rae, pupil at Shaftesbury High School in Chorley, received the Eric Wright Shield for Consistent Effort. He said: “I’m really pleased with my achievement and am excited to begin a career in Construction and to use all the skills I’ve learnt over the past two years.”

A number of other students also received special commendations for their work. Charlie Yates, also from Shaftesbury High School, winner of the Lancashire Education Authority Shield and Aaron Riding, from Wellfield Business and Enterprise College, overall best learner in Brickwork.

All Hallows Catholic High School in Penwortham received the Chorley and South-Ribble Shield for the best overall school and to further add to its success, two pupils, Rebecca Love and Jessica Horsefield, jointly received the ‘Best Learner’ award for Painting and Decorating.

Attended by heads, deputies and teaching staff from most of the South Ribble Schools, the event also played host to senior officials from Lancashire Education Authority and Mr and Mrs Eric Wright.
