Eric Wright Civil Engineering attended the Burneside Parish Residents’ Association community afternoon on Saturday 24th February, to make a donation (£200) to their fund to acquire a defibrillator for the village. In addition to raising funds for the purchase, the purpose of the event was to raise community awareness of services, groups and facilities available in the area and encourage public involvement with the village organisations. Over 20 organisations were booked in on the day and Eric Wright Civil Engineering were there jointly with Cumbria County Council. Some of the other organisations attending the event included parish clubs, church, police, mountain rescue and fire service.
Burneside, near Kendal, was one of the South Lakeland villages severely affected by the flooding of the River Kent by Storm Desmond around Christmas 2015 which damaged the village’s bridges. The village is bisected by the River Kent so considerable disruption has been caused by the inundation.
Eric Wright Civil Engineering is currently engaged by Cumbria County Council as “Principal Designer” to construct the new Ford Bridge in the village. This forms part of a a succession of contracts on the Council’s Infrastructure Recovery Programme through frameworks and select tenders, to deal with the consequences of the inundations and creation of resilience to bridges and highways throughout the County. Nearly all of the works have involved working in the water on main rivers and lakes, in Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSi), many located in working within the Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A great variety of projects have been undertaken that have included all sorts of structural repairs and protection works, highway reconstruction, embankment stabilisation, soil nailing, soft and hard landscaping, creation of cofferdams, complicated temporary works, the construction of new bridges, culvert construction and drainage repairs, inspection and surveying, diving and rope access.
