Overview

The existing school building was deemed unsuitable for refurbishment, therefore, a new building was required to be built on site.

The project involved the construction of a new single storey SFA primary school, fully fitted out with modern classrooms and ICT suite to enhance the education provision for young students.

The new school features include hard and soft landscaping externally to create an attractive recreational area for the staff and students.

Once the new school was completed, EWC demolished the existing building to make way for a new, custom play area.

Key Challenges

Working on a live school site meant that it was imperative that students and teachers were afforded additional protection from the works.

Due to the location of the site, access was through narrow residential streets. To reduce obstructions and inconvenience, site deliveries were phased to occur outside of peak times.

With the site being adjacent to Heaton Mersey Local Nature Reserve, extra measures were put in place to protect wildlife.

Working alongside Envirotech and representatives from Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council’s Planning and Environmental departments, EWC excavated a trench and erected a chain link fence to protect badgers from accessing the construction site.

Added Value

EWC engaged with staff and students to educate them about the construction site. As part of this, a competition took place to design the site safety poster.  The awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed designs were presented at a special assembly, to which the site team were invited.

EWC carried out a talk to the students on electrical safety and how services in the new building would operate.

EWC held two community “Listening Events” with local residents within the catchment area.

The school was delighted with the finished building.  The staff and students even dedicated a song to the site team at a special assembly:  https://twitter.com/stjohns_primary/status/1172458881127239681
