Overview
Eric Wright Construction were appointed as Principal Contractor for the design and construction of this new two storey school building, which provides additional classroom facilities, ICT teaching rooms and science rooms together with improved staff facilities.
The new school building was completed and handed over to the client prior to the 2020/21 school term.
Key Challenges
Originally, this scheme shared land with a small wholesalers business at the back of the site. EWC constructed a temporary entrance so the business could be accessed and remain operational without disruption throughout the works. An access license was needed for us to do this, which was granted.
The site project manager remained in touch with the local residents and existing school to ensure that they were kept updated at every stage of the build.
The roads around the site were extremely busy during prayer time at the mosque, so deliveries were scheduled around this.
The demolition works were planned for October half term to avoid disruption to the school timetable. Noisy works were also planned around the school exam timetable.
Added Value
A considerable amount of effort was made to be a good neighbour during the construction works. The site team undertook numerous goodwill works, including donation of nine data points to the school, installation of an outside tap and having weekly site tours for governors and students.
Throughout the duration of this project, EWC utilised the locality of the project and employed 79% of local labour.
