Overview

Eric Wright Special Projects was the appointed contractor for the construction of a new satellite ambulance station and associate parking on the existing site of Burnley general teaching hospital.

The hospital itself looks over residential properties and a vicarage so Eric Wright Special Projects avoided disturbances at all costs.

Operations can now take place with uninterrupted movement of vehicles and ease of access for people on shift. The building has additional space for comfort during breaks and a training room to allow staff development and incident simulation. The project also included the development of vehicle parking and a service yard. The new building will deliver an improved service for its users.

Key Challenges

Eric Wright Special Projects combatted some key challenges at North West Ambulance Service, Burnley efficiently and professionally. Mitigation measures were put into place to minimise disruption to the hospital. This included constructing a remote new staff car park in which the staff can use freely without the disturbance of the on-going works.

Another way of EWSP avoiding disruption to the hospital and surrounding areas was connecting with those most affected i.e. neighbours such as Burnley General Teaching Hospital across the road. Regular newsletters with relevant and updated information were posted out. This included the status of the works, the site manager information, start dates, end dates, images of the planned works, images of the current works progress and frequently asked questions. This kept people in the surrounding area up to date avoided any disruption complaints.

Added Value

As on all our projects, safety was a priority, with strong policies and procedures in place for our site team, including training on appropriate steps to protect vulnerable road users around the site. Eric Wright Special Projects also did a safety talk at a nearby primary school about the dangers of playing on or near a building site.

We also added value through the use of our local supply chain, minimising the projects impact on the environment and promoting opportunities to local companies and workers.

Eco-friendly cabins were used within this site as part of our company’s environmental strategy. Eco-friendly cabins reduce our carbon footprint by maximising energy efficiency.

Eric Wright Company supports mental health first aid training and this site had clear signage for all staff to access.

“‘I am delighted with this new ambulance station. I visited it last week. It is fantastic, centrally located and next to Burnley General Hospital where it is needed. One of the best things is the training suite where paramedics can improve their skills on site without having to go elsewhere.’ ”
