Overview

The scheme is well located to serve the University of York and York St John University and also the local teaching hospital.

The development consists of two 4 storey blocks containing 326 study bedrooms in a cluster style typology with shared kitchens along with independent studio flats. On site facilities also include student and administration facilities, bicycle and car parking within a secure setting.

Externally the development is landscaped and secured with a boundary fence with gated access for car, cycles and pedestrians. There is limited car parking within the grounds for staff and drop off times with secure cycle parking provided in line with current good practice.

Landscaped garden areas are provided for use of the staff and students within the grounds.

The development has been designed by Leeds-based architects DLA and provides high quality accommodation built to industry leading standards for student housing.

Key Challenges

The project is located in the historic city of York in a busy central location, requiring robust logistics and planning.

December 2015 saw one of the worst floods in the modern history of York. In response, the Planner and Project Manager refined the programme and sequencing to ensure that the scheme was delivered on time and to a high quality specification.

Significant client changes during construction were incorporated through the team working closely together.

Added Value

The site team supported York based social enterprise, Yourcafe who use surplus food and home grown produce to create meals for the community.

The team donated eight bags of top quality soil go into two very large raised beds which had recently been adopted by Yourcafe.

The site achieved a ‘Performance Beyond Compliance’ certificate from the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), with the site managed to minimise disruption for site neighbours and the community.

Client Feedback

“It has been a real pleasure working with such a dedicated team. The sense of pride and commitment from everyone in the team has been tremendous. From the outset the support with design management helped us to make informed decisions on those elements of the scheme we wanted to change. The commercial variations were always dealt with promptly and very clear information provided. The site organisation was exceptional. It is rare to find such a tidy site where so many subcontractors work together in such a cooperative way.”
