The Carlisle New Care Home has been developed with a focus on positive outcomes for people living with dementia, their families and carers. It provides an integral part of the support offered across the health and social care network in Cumbria, which combined with other support enable people to ‘live well with dementia’.
The scheme creates a homely environment which is dementia friendly, allowing residents the freedom and confidence to use their abilities to the fullest extent.
The building form is heavily influenced by the operational requirements and the design standards for dementia care. Natural ventilation and day lighting within the building will be incorporated with good views out on to the adjacent garden areas. The design provides the users with a high quality living / working environment which will also help support the recruitment and retention of dedicated staff.
The following design principles are to apply to the scheme:
- Homely environment
- Dementia friendly to meet current guidance
- Free unsupervised access to safe outdoor space Freedom of movement within the units for residents, taking into account their specific needs
