Windy Harbour Junction Works
Overview
EWCE was selected as the delivery partner for the project by EM Highways due to our in house expertise in delivering similar complex projects of this nature. The Windy Harbour junction between the A585 and A586 suffers from serious congestion and has a poor safety record. The aim of the scheme was to help to reduce daily congestion, reduce journey times for the travelling public, boost the economy and improve safety.
The works involved realignment and significant widening of the existing crossroads to create extra lanes through the junction, some over 600m in length, enabled by large scale earthworks. Included in the works were improvements to pedestrian routes, the addition of cycle facilities and upgrading of the traffic signal controllers. The whole junction and approaches were also re-surfaced with over 20,000m2 of new surfacing being laid.
Key Challenges
Examples of this include:
- Coordination and management of service diversions
- Installation of new services and drains across the live carriageways out of hours to minimise disruption
- Maintaining existing traffic light system for the maximum possible duration to minimise disruption from the use of temporary traffic lights
- Rationalising road widths and temporary traffic lanes to enable over 90% of the work to be achieved without compromising the number of available lanes and traffic flows.
