FM Director Article: Rebecca Massey gives her insight on Net Zero and Operational Carbon

Rebecca Massey, our Head of Property and Asset Management recently featured in July’s edition of FM Director to share her insights on embodied and operational carbon, investing in improving energy performance and how collaborative working might hold the key to radical carbon emission transformation.

Following November 2022’s COP27 and the introduction of the UK governments Net Zero Council, the need for education and action around carbon emissions and decarbonisation in the built environment has never been higher. Read Rebecca’s article in FM Director on pages 64/65 here.

Rebecca commented: ‘It was great to feature in July’s publication of FM Director discussing operational carbon, decarbonisation and radical carbon emission transformation. The construction and property development sector accounts for 25% of all greenhouse gas emissions and it’s predicted that by 2050, eight out of 10 buildings will have already been established. These stats highlight how important exploring new construction methods are, as well as the need to decarbonise current buildings to be more sustainable.

‘Operational carbon accounts for 28% of global greenhouse gases and Eric Wright Partnerships have been working closely with clients to look at the estate they occupy and what changes can be made to move towards a zero carbon estate. We’ve also supported customers in applying for funding to deliver decarbonisation and been successful in delivering decarbonisation projects across both health and education sectors.

‘Eric Wright Partnerships recently worked with Blackburn Diocese on their £8.4m decarbonisation project. We were appointed as the lead consultant to deliver 29 individual decarbonisation projects across 13 schools aimed at reducing energy consumption. The works included replacing gas/oil heating with air source heating conversions, roofing works, double glazing replacements and Solar Panel installations. The scheme presented us with various challenges including working on listed buildings, logistical issues from working in rural areas, lack of building insulation, running costs for electricity, surrounding buildings in close proximity such as churches and Third party complexities.’
