All in a day’s work for Eric Wright Water with mock rescue and evacuation

Eric Wright Water is currently working in partnership with Costain’s MSP contract and United Utilities to upgrade an existing treatment plant that manages stormwater during heavy rainfalls.  The work includes refurbishment of existing drum screens, escalator screens, penstocks and actuators, band screen and all electrical works including instrumentation and building services.  The work area is below ground on different levels and requires all personnel to be confined spaces trained.  For health and safety, we also have a permanent rescue team with full breathing apparatus fully trained to carry out a rescue and evacuation in case of emergencies.

Last week, the team was put into action following a radio call from a low-level part of the treatment plant.  The mocked-up injured party had fallen from height and sustained injuries to his lower leg.  The injured person was successfully stretchered and evacuated in just over 8 minutes from low level to the exit point awaiting the arrival of an ambulance.

This training and mock rescues are an essential part of any live project to ensure all team members are fully conversant should they ever be faced with a real-life situation.
