Milestone for Standish leisure development

Construction of the new Standish Leisure Centre reached a significant milestone this week as Wigan Council and Inspiring healthy lifestyles celebrated the development’s ‘topping out’.

Traditionally held to bring luck to a new building when the topmost beam is put in place, the topping out ceremony took place on site of the new state-of-the-art leisure centre.

The new site, which will be run by Inspiring healthy lifestyles on behalf of Wigan Council, will feature a new gym and studio spaces and will host a range of group exercise classes including Les Mill RPM.

Outdoor state-of-the-art 3G pitches will sit alongside the building and will be available for bookings for community and club groups from opening.

The next phase of the project will see the internal fitting out of the development begin before residents will be able to enjoy the new facilities when it opens in early January.

Pete Burt, Managing Director of Inspiring healthy lifestyles said: “This is another exciting development for Wigan which will enhance our town’s leisure offer, helping keep residents active and healthy. We’re really proud to be involved in the project and to be managing the facility once it’s up and running.”

Cllr James Moodie, lead member for leisure and public health at Wigan Council, said: “The topping out ceremony is an exciting phase in the development of Standish Leisure Centre. We look forward to seeing the new facilities open and in full use in the new year.”

Commenting on the ceremony John Hartnett, operations director at Eric Wright Construction, said: “We are delighted to be working with the client and have today attended the Topping Out ceremony to celebrate a major milestone in the project which will see the new Leisure Centre bring a number of fantastic facilities to the local community in Standish and Wigan.”
