Skipton Town Centre - Development Update

We have recently lodged a fresh planning application for 9 High Street and for the land to the rear of the former clinic and Town Hall. The scheme represents a complete redesign to last years proposal. The scheme proposes four large shops fronting Jerry Croft and the High Street Car Park with restaurant/café uses being targeted for the two new units on High Street.

The scheme offers real benefits to Skipton

  • Replacement of unloved former clinic building at 9 High Street with restaurants that will encourage more activity at the top end of the High Street
  • Creation of Museum Yard - a south facing public courtyard served by the new restaurants and positioned along a new pedestrian route from High Street through to Jerry Croft and M&S Simply Food
  • Residents are given more choice and variety in the town centre reducing the need to travel to other shopping centres. Encouraging people to shop locally will help other town centre shops and businesses
  • The investment in the town centre would mean over 150 new permanent jobs are created

In the six months from the date the previous application was refused, we have listened to the comments and concerns raised and tried to address as many as we can. As well as creating Museum Yard and offering a new pedestrian route, there are other important differences to this application:

  • The proposal allows for the capacity of the High Street Car Park to be increased resulting in the net loss of parking being reduced to 66 spaces. The net loss comprises 21 all week public spaces and 45 weekend spaces.
  • Pedestrian safety is enhanced by the introduction of a new pavement on Jerry Croft along with other measures to slow the traffic
  • The building height of the Jerry Croft building has been reduced

The original objective was to strengthen Skipton town centre's appeal to local shoppers and visitors by providing a mix of shops and restaurants that will offer a greater range of goods and services in a convenient and central location. We believe this application achieves this in a manner that will enhance the appeal and attractiveness of this part of the town centre.
